About Tropic Cove Tropic Cove was established in 1968 in the small town of Alanson by Phillip Ellwanger. In the 1970's we moved to 10 miles south to Petoskey. Starting with aquariums and tropical fish (still our specialty), we now carry a full line of supplies for birds, small animals and reptiles, along with dog and cat supplies. In 1996, Phil's son Kevin took over the family business and has since expanded the marine aquarium section of the store.
